Specialty Classes

*Limited to 4 dogs per class

*This is a 4 week program

Shyness, fear, and fear-reactivity can manifest in a variety of ways - from avoidance, to barking, to hiding, growling, and beyond. This four-week class will introduce the principles of positive-reinforcement behaviour modification, discussion and application of counterconditioning and desensitization, identification of triggers specific to each dog and how to address them, and how to work through fearful situations as they crop up in the real world. We will spend time learning terminology, the science behind behaviour modification, how to read dog body language, and discussing triggers, as well as working on positive, short-duration exposure to potential fear triggers for the dogs that are ready. While we will work on some simple training and training concepts, this class is focused on behaviour modification and is not a substitute for our Puppy or Bachelor classes - this class is for teams that need help working through fears in order to be ready for regular group classes.

This class is appropriate for dogs of any age that display fearfulness, whether mild or severe. This class is NOT appropriate for dogs that cannot be controlled by their handler or that have a serious bite history. If you are unsure as to whether this class is a good fit for you and your dog, please contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions.

There will be no dog-dog interaction during this class, and dogs will not be provoked or forced into fearful situations. There are no requirements for this behaviour modification intensive.

BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION STRATEGIES

FOR STRESSED AND/OR WORRIED DOGS

Start Dates: June 8th @ 10am

*This is a 2 week program

Does your dog have some basic training down, but you need some help troubleshooting and techniques for continuing to improve loose leash walking? Then this is the class for you! This two week class will explore different common issues and barriers to excellent loose leash walking and equip handlers with more tools to improve or progress the behaviour forward. In week 1, we will discuss each team’s specific issues, loose leash walking problems in general, and talk about different ways to engage and motivate our dogs while practicing. In week 2, we will continue to practice, adding in more games, techniques, and FUN ways to make loose leash walking a good time instead of a drag (or a pull, ha!). Weather permitting, we may do some work outside, too, so come prepared!

Dogs and handlers should have a basic understanding of marker-reward training.

Is Buffy a bolter? Does Fido forge ahead? In this two week class, we will teach the basics of training a dog to wait at the door (or other barrier) on cue, and work on progressing that skill to include options such as the dog waiting on a mat, waiting with distractions, cueing the dog to a mat with a doorbell and/or knock, and more. The class will be tailored to each individual dog’s skill level, whether a beginner or ready to advance the difficulty of the behaviour. This class will include a variety of impulse control exercises, as well as games and force-free techniques to build duration and challenge for the dogs.

Dogs and handlers should have a basic understanding of marker-reward training.

Whether your dog pretends like he’s never heard you speak when you ask him to come or just needs some polishing work, we want to help you ROCK YOUR RECALL! This two week class will focus on distance and distraction, the two primary challenges we face when asking our dogs to come when called, as well as engagement and attention games. We will work on different attention games and troubleshoot general issues as well as those specific to each dog/handler team in class, then practice progressing skills that motivate, engage, and excite your dog to come enthusiastically when called. We will add distance and distractions as appropriate, including an option to work outside (on a long line), weather permitting, in week two. This class is open to dogs with a long history of “ignoring” coming when they’re called as well as dogs who’ve never been taught the behaviour; wherever you are on your recall journey, we can help move you towards your goals!

Dogs and handlers should have a basic understanding of marker-reward training.

ROCK YOUR RECALL

COME BACK EVERY TIME!

Start Dates:
October 22nd @ 12:30pm

*This is a 2 week program

If your dog is excited and has a hard time staying under control while saying hello to friendly people, this is the class for you. In this two week intensive we will discuss strategies towards having successful greetings with people we meet on the street. We put our focus on the dog's self-control with a heavy emphasis on rewarding the behaviour we want. This class will involve focus and attention games, reinforcement of basic behaviours such as sits and downs, and putting the pieces together in the fundamentals of successful greetings.

This class is geared towards dogs that are excited (or overly excited) to meet new people. This two week intensive does not involve dog-dog greetings, nor is it suitable for dogs who are reactive towards people or other dogs.

Dogs and handlers should have a basic understanding of marker-reward training.
